Thirty years ago
I bought you from a shop in
Hull: long-handled andElegant, cheap yet
Functional - perfect for those
Student meals of
Creamed rice straight out of
The tin or for extracting
Those dried-on coffee
Granules from the
Bottom of the jar; and when
I returned to Norfolk
You came too - somehow
Surviving half-a-dozen
House moves when all
Other cutlery
And crockery was lost; and
In thirty year's time
Will you, I wonder,
Still be there when the children
Rummage through our
Last belongings to
Decide what goes to landfill
Or to charity
And might easily
Over-look a commonplace
Old spoon, ignorant
Of your long-handled
History and how finally
You outlasted me. |
