Ode to Light

by Meir Ben Elijah (Written in Hebrew c.1290)

Accursed be mine enemy
  Deceiving all my brothers
O when will you to Jacob's House
Say "Come and walk in Light"?

Mighty art Thou and glorious:
Those in darkness dwelling
Thou dost surround with Light.

With heart's enclosure torn apart,
Those coming in Thy name fare ill
Though evil comes I hope for good
  And shall await the Light.

Mighty art Thou and glorious:
Those in darkness dwelling
Thou dost surround with Light.

And every prophet's words are mocked,
  Thy child's plight despised
Until unable to discern
The path picked out by Light.

Mighty art Thou and glorious:
Those in darkness dwelling
Thou dost surround with Light.

We languish, suffering in the land
  And hear the brute's insults,
And steadfastly do we endure
  While waiting for the Light.

Mighty art Thou and glorious:
Those in darkness dwelling
Thou dost surround with Light.

A heavy yoke on us they lay
  Commanding and compelling
That we abandon and forsake
  Our only hope and Light.

Mighty art Thou and glorious:
Those in darkness dwelling
Thou dost surround with Light.

Our blood is shed on garments fringed
Our heart it is they covet
But may You ever comfort us
  For this by holy Light.

Mighty art Thou and glorious:
Those in darkness dwelling
Thou dost surround with Light.

Hast thou forgotten grace to give?
  O, gather now our camps
Dispersed afar like criminals
  Refusing to see Light.

Mighty art Thou and glorious:
Those in darkness dwelling
Thou dost surround with Light.

Thine exiled one, O King, recall
  His sweet aroma scenting,
From Tyrants who abhor his scent
  And never will see Light.

Mighty art Thou and glorious:
Those in darkness dwelling
Thou dost surround with Light.

And though his plight be multiplied,
  O favour him with kindness
And in his dwelling of despair
  His footsteps guide by Light.

Mighty art Thou and glorious:
Those in darkness dwelling
Thou dost surround with Light.

Though natural converse be suppressed
  And his assemblies ended,
Yet heal us with His hand devine
Both small and great by Light.

Mighty art Thou and glorious:
Those in darkness dwelling
Thou dost surround with Light.

His vision now in secret hides
  And dreams are unexplained
Why crown majestic lies disgraced
None knows till comes the light.

Mighty art Thou and glorious:
Those in darkness dwelling
Thou dost surround with Light.

O why must his oppressors gloat
  In forcing him to sin?
For all their haughty utterances
  Rebel against the Light.

Mighty art Thou and glorious:
Those in darkness dwelling
Thou dost surround with Light.

In every corner scattered far
  He waits for secret word
For all the men of vision are
  Imprisoned without Light.

Mighty art Thou and glorious:
Those in darkness dwelling
Thou dost surround with Light.

The tyrants caused his Crown to fall
  Determined on his end
While he in cell for air does gasp
He still hopes for the Light.

Mighty art Thou and glorious:
Those in darkness dwelling
Thou dost surround with Light.

Ere yet in exile he be lost
O let him soon be freed.
From all his would-be slaughterers
  In darkness not in Light.

Mighty art Thou and glorious:
Those in darkness dwelling
Thou dost surround with Light.

Waiting, hoping, all his days,
  Day by day for comfort
Let the Mighty One in heaven
  Judgement bring to Light.

Mighty art Thou and glorious:
Those in darkness dwelling
Thou dost surround with Light.

Since midst mine enemies I'm placed
  Arise and plead my cause
Uphold the Kingdom of my Lord
Let Light shine through the Light.

Mighty art Thou and glorious:
Those in darkness dwelling
Thou dost surround with Light.
